BIO3378 - Sodium percarbonate / Sodium Carbonate

Also called sodium percarbonate, sodium carbonate peroxhydrate, sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate or solid hydrogen peroxide, sodium percarbonate contains neither chlorine nor phosphate. It is composed of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. An association which gives it excellent cleaning, whitening, disinfecting and degreasing powers. Indeed, dissolved in water, it decomposes into sodium carbonate (or soda crystals), a real surfactant cleaner, and into hydrogen peroxide, a formidable whitener.

This product is often found in the form of a white granulated powder. It could also be confused with soda crystals or baking soda. The difference between sodium percarbonate and baking soda? The first should be used with great caution and it is important to keep it in a cool place, as it is unstable to heat above 50°C. On the other hand, its whitening properties are more powerful than those of bicarbonate. The latter is more versatile and can be used in cooking, beauty and for the maintenance of the house. How to maintain a terrace with sodium percarbonate?

Has your wooden terrace become grayish? This is due to the vagaries of the weather: sunlight and rain. Fortunately, we have a tip to help you preserve the color of your wooden terrace as much as possible. Mix one part of powdered sodium percarbonate and ten parts of lukewarm water in a container. Scrub your terrace using a broom with this mixture. Leave it on for about 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Remember to protect yourself with gloves and glasses.

What are the uses of sodium percarbonate for laundry care?

To keep the whiteness and shine of your white clothes, thanks to its oxidizing properties, sodium percarbonate is the solution. When making a white machine, add 1 tablespoon of sodium percarbonate to the drum and run a cycle at 40°C, or 60°C for your household linen. Percarbonate is also very effective as a stain remover. Soak your stained laundry in a basin of hot water with a little sodium percarbonate powder (1 to 3 tablespoons per liter of water). Rub the stain and let the laundry soak for a few hours (no more than an hour for colored or dark textiles), then put it in the washing machine.

How to clean your toilet with percarbonate of soda?

To whiten the toilet bowl in the blink of an eye and make limescale disappear, percarbonate of soda is an unstoppable method. To disinfect your toilet, mix three tablespoons of percarbonate of soda in a liter of boiling water and pour this mixture into the bowl. Leave on for 15 minutes, scrub and flush. If a limescale deposit has formed, in this case, here is a recipe for magic anti-limescale powder. Mix:

• 4 tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate,
• 2 tablespoons of sodium percarbonate
• 4 tablespoons of citric acid.

Mix and store in an airtight container. Before going to bed, pour 2 to 3 tablespoons of this mixture into the bottom of the bowl and leave it to sit overnight. In the morning, scrub and flush the toilet.

What dosage for proper use?

The ideal dosage for cleaning and degreasing tile joints and getting rid of traces of mold is equal to one volume of sodium percarbonate for 10 volumes of hot or lukewarm water. Most percarbonate recipes consist of one to two tablespoons of powder per quart of water. For machine washing, count one tablespoon for white laundry and two spoons if there are stained clothes.

What are the dangers and precautions for use?

To use sodium percarbonate safely, be sure to wear protective gloves because active sodium percarbonate can be irritating. To avoid splashes in the eyes, it is recommended to wear glasses. A formidable bleaching agent, it can discolor certain sensitive colors, so start by testing before use. Sodium percarbonate can clean a large part of the house, but be careful not to use it on waxed, lacquered, painted or aluminum surfaces.
